Once more unto the breach! 2017 TBR Challenge

So in 2016 I managed exactly one TBR challenge post and one draft post that I never completed. Hopefully I can do better in 2017. And while I didn’t  manage to report on the TBR books that I read, I did at least read at least a book in my TBR pile each month before purchasing other books.

Some of the books in my TBR were books that I had started and put aside, thinking that some day I will finish this. In 2016 I actually restarted several of those books and realized that the day to refinish this story has not come and probably will never come. So those books became DNFs and now have been donated (or if ebooks deleted from my ebook reader). One things that I have gradually learned is that there are some books that don’t work for me and holding on to them in hopes that someday they might is just foolish. Who needs books (or anything else) that are simply clutter and dust catchers in your life?

Setting up this blog and planning to do this challenge did help (even though I failed miserably at the reporting part) because it did force to think about the many books that I had accumulated that have been sitting around unread (some for years!). I also purchased less books in 2016 because I was so aware that I did have all those books in the pile.

Wendy at The Misadventures of Super Librarian is once again organizing the TBR Challenge and she’s posted a new list of potential monthly themes. I’m not sure that I will follow exactly all the themes (for example, I don’t know if I have any true short shorts left in my TBR– ironically that was a category in my TBR that I read a lot of in 2016. But I’m going to look and see what is there). I also don’t know that every book will be a romance, I have other genres sitting on my TBR, some of which support the themes listed below and also need to be read.

But even if I don’t make the themes I’m going to try to keep to my resolution to read at least one book a month in my TBR before purchasing anything new. And I’m going to keep trying to be mindful about my 2017 book purchases.

So without further ado — here are the 2017 themes:

January 18 – We Love Short Shorts! (category romance, short stories, novella etc.)
February 15 – New-To-You Author
March 15 – Comfort Read (Favorite Author? Favorite Trope? Favorite Sub Genre?)
April 19 – Contemporary
May 17 – Something Different (outside your comfort zone, unusual setting, non-romance etc.)
June 21 – Favorite Trope (a favorite theme – amnesia? secret baby? fairy tale? friends-to-lovers? etc.)
July 19 – Series Catch-Up (a book from a series you’re behind on)
August 16 – Kicking It Old School (publication date 10 years or older)
September 20 – Historical
October 18 – Paranormal or Romantic Suspense
November 15 – Recommended Read (a book recommended to you by someone)
December 20 – Holiday Themes

  1. I learned a lot time ago that keeping a DNF around for another day when it might possibly “work better for me” doesn’t work. Because by that point? It’s too late. It has the DNF Stink on it and when I go to pick it up again? I just remember the Stink. So it immediately lands in the “get rid of it” pile. Harsh? Probably. But dang, I own more books than is truly sensible.

And themes, as always, are totally optional :). Back when I was just a participant (and not the hostess) I rarely followed the themes.
